There was a time, in the not too distant past, when in demolition circles the term work wear meant a tatty pair of jeans topped with an ill-fitting t-shirt and a lumberjack-style shirt that could stand up under its own weight coupled with the ubiquitous tatty trainer shoes. But as demolition contractors have evolved to take site welfare and worker health more seriously, so the working wardrobe of the average demolition operative has changed to encompass designer-style safety glasses or goggles, high visibility t-shirts, and safety gloves made from high-tech "breathable" fabrics and Gore-Tex safety boots for example. But never is the need for proper work wear and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) more apparent than in the dark days and early nights of a British winter. And in an enlightened age where it’s not uncommon for demolition contractors to provide sun screen for their site workers during the three and a half days that make up the British summer, the time has come for many contractors and their staff to take a closer look at some of the latest winter work wear products on offer. Of course, one of the key challenges faced when selecting work wear is that it needs to fit correctly and that it allows the wearer to move freely. This becomes more problematic during winter months when workers are inclined to layer items of clothing on top of each other to keep the bitter wind at bay. The first line in defence against the cold is usually a high visibility jacket, and there is a huge array available, many of them with detachable linings that can be worn as a light jacket during the summer and then upgraded to fend off the rain and snow in winter. However, as anyone that has worn a high vis’ jacket for any length of time will testify, they soon become hot and uncomfortable. At this point, they are often discarded by the wearer, freeing his movement but immediately contravening site safety regulations. To address this, we have developed a range of high visibility sweatshirts and even hoodies. Not only do these ensure that operatives remain visible and safe if they remove their coat, they’re also extremely popular with younger and less experienced operatives. Many view the hoodies in particular as vaguely trendy and are, therefore, more inclined to wear them. The range of work wear clothing available may seem overwhelming but with good advice from a trustworthy supplier you and your staff will be safe warm and dry. It is interesting to note that many of these items share many characteristics with the clothing worn by athletes and footballer players, allowing the skin to "breathe" and drawing perspiration away from the body. This is particularly important during the winter months as it helps reduce the risk of rapid cooling of the body, a key contributor to the common cold and, therefore, absence through sickness. A good base layer garment is essential such as the old favourite long johns. The choices of base layer thermal garments are now truly bewildering with all the major manufacturers providing them. Another common problem during the winter months is the inclination to wear a woollen or thermal hat under a hard hat. This does a great job of keeping the wearer’s head and face warm but it can make the hard hat ill-fitting and, therefore, less safe. But there is a wide range of winter liners available that are warm enough to keep the chill wind out, but thin enough to ensure that hard hats fit snugly and safely. Gloves, or more accurately high visibility gloves, are also becoming an increasingly common site on UK demolition sites. Not only do they offer an additional level of visibility and protection, they’re also easy to spot in the mud and are far less likely to get lost and require replacement. They may cost slightly more, but the chances are you’ll need less of them! To conclude, I would offer the following advice: Discuss the importance of workwear and PPE as part of your company or site’s Toolbox Talk In addition to checking that they’re wearing hard hats and high vis’ check to ensure that your operatives workwear is suitable for the job AND the climate Ensure that operatives have ready access to spare or replacement workwear and PPE, and bear in mind that some contractors, sites or industries have specific requirements on colour of workwear and PPE. The garments are tested for waterproofness (X) and water vapour resistance (Y). Effective visibility is to be provided by a fluorescent fabric and reflective stripes. The visibility is measured as a combination of the area and positioning of the retro reflective and luminous materials (X) and the quality of the retro reflective material (Y). X Area retro reflective/ luminous material; level 1,2,3 Y Retro reflective material; quality 1 or 2 PPE CATEGORY 2 STANDARD EN 531 Protective clothing for industrial workers exposed to heat (excluding firefighters’ and welders’ clothing) The standard specifies the performance requirements for protective clothing for workers exposed to heat. Limited flame spread (A) (Pass/Fail) is tested in accordance with a test method defined by EN 532. To pass the EN 531 requirements the clothing must also protect against at least one form of heat. The heat may be in the form of convective heat B (level B1-B5) according to EN 367, radiant heat C (level C1-C4) according to EN 366, molten aluminium splash (D) according to EN 373, molten iron splash (E) according to EN 373. HH products subjected to EN 531 are tested on radiant- and convective heat. PPE CATEGORY 2 STANDARD EN 533 Protective clothing - Protection against heat and flame Limited flame spread materials and material assemblies Protection against heat and flame. The standard specifies the performance requirements for the limited flame spread properties of materials and material assemblies used in protective clothing. The material(s) is classified in accordance with an index for limitation of flame spread (X) before and after a standard washing procedure (Y). X/Y Flame spread index, index 1,2 or 3. Y Number of washes at a given temperature. If the index is 1 (lowest level) The garment can only be used outside a garment with index 2 or 3. PPE CATEGORY 2 STANDARD EN 1149 Protective clothing - Electrostatic properties EN 1149 constitutes a set of requirements and test methods to measure protection against static electricity or charge decay. EN 1149-1 specifies electrostatic requirements and test methods for electrostatic dissipative protective clothing to avoid incendiary charges. This standard is used for measuring surface resistivity of woven or kitted fabrics with metal fibers providing grounding. EN 1149-2 specifies a test method for measuring the electrical vertical resistance of protective clothing materials. This European standard is not applicable for specifying protection against main voltages. EN 1149-3 specifies methods for measuring the dissipation of electrostatic charge from the surface of materials for garments. This standard is used for surface conducting or core conducting fibers, i.e. fibers without grounding. prEN 1149-5 specifies product standard requirements for electrostatic dissipative protective clothing, used as part of a total earthed system to avoid flammable discharges. The material shall meet requirements according to EN 1149 -3 or -1 PPE CATEGORY 2 STANDARD EN 470-1 Protective clothing for use in welding and allied processes - Part 1: General requirements The clothing is intended to protect the user against small splashes of molten metal (EN 348), short contact time with flame (EN 532), and ultra violet radiation, and to be worn continuously for up to 8 hours at ambient temperature. PPE CATEGORY 3 STANDARD IEC 61482-1-2:2007 Live working – Protective clothing against the thermal hazards of an electric arc – Part 1: Test methods – Method 2 – Determination of the arc protection class of material and clothing by using a constrained and directed arc (box test) The test is intended to simulate an accidental exposure to an electric are in a low voltage installation. This standard specifies testing of materials and of complete garments on a mannequin. Material tests are used to determine thermal insulation and corresponding risks of skin burns, whereas the garment tests are to make sure that the clothing still is operational after exposure. Both material and garment tests are carried out with a low voltage installation (400 V AC). The duration of the electric arc is 500ms and the electric current is respectively 4 kA for class 1 and 7 kA for class 2 protection. PPE CATEGORY 2 STANDARD EN 393 Buoyancy Aids 50N The standard specifies test methods and requirements for design and performance of buoyancy aids with 50 Newton (N) buoyancy for adult sizes. The standard cover floating vests and floating suits providing a minimum of 50N buoyancy. Helly Hansen Workwear are currently only carrying floating suits. Buoyancy Aids do not bring the person into a stable position in the water. As the buoyancy material is a foam, our floating suits provides suitable protection against hypothermia according to EN ISO 15027-3 Class D standard. PPE CATEGORY 2 STANDARD EN 396 Lifejacket 150N (CE 0120 Safety harness/line) This standard specifies the requirements for performance and design and the test procedures of lifejackets with 150 Newton (N) buoyancy in adult size. With the buoyancy on the chest and around the neck the lifejacket will turn an unconscious person to a safe upright position with mouth and nose well above water. 150N lifejackets are suitable for use in coastal and offshore conditions wearing normal foul weather clothing. It is not suitable if heavy tools or equipment are carried. 150N lifejackets from Helly Hansen provides buoyancy with inflatable buoyancy in a single chamber. The lung is inflated by a Co2-cylinder. To ensure the highest standard of safety, all our 150N lifejackets are equipped with a fully automatic inflation system. Helly Hansen offers two variants of 150N lifejackets. One with a donning system with ordinary web belts, - and one with a Safety Harness that may withstand a force of 1.000kg in order to protect the user against falling overboard. Our 275N lifejackets are provided with a Safety Harness that withstands a force of minimum 1.000kg in order to protect the user against falling overboard. Please note that the harness/line-system is not providing appropriate protection against falls from heights. 275N lifejackets from Helly Hansen also comply with the SOLAS-standard and provides buoyancy with two separate inflatable chambers. The chambers are automatically inflated by two Co2-cylinders/inflation systems. The SOLAS-standard, developed in the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), is generally regarded as the most important of all international treaties concerning the safety of merchant ships. EN 340 Protective clothing – General requirements HH protective clothing is designed and manufactured not to adversely affect the health or hygiene of the user.
